Baltimore, Maryland—On July 26th and 27th, 2014, Sifu Mai Du led a team of 36 students ranging from ages 6 to 40-plus to compete in the 26th annual U.S.         International KuoShu Championship Tournament.

Sifu Mai Du has run a WahLumTam Tui Northern Praying Mantis Kung Fu & Tai Chi School in Malden, MA since 2006, and she has brought her students to this competition in Baltimore since 2005.

WahLumof Malden is one of many schools in an esteemed international kung fu system that numbers 18 schools, founded by Grandmaster Pui Chan. Sifu Du’s school promotes healthy living, exercise, camaraderie, good sportsmanship, community participation, respect for one’s teachers and parents, and a strong work ethic. It provides a positive structure and attainable aspirations for many youth.     All of this year’s competitors practiced diligently to be able to demonstrate their kung fu prowess at the tournament. They represented the cities of Malden, Everett, Boston, Quincy, Andover, Dover, Chelmsford, and Lynn. The competitors returned home with even more medals than last year– 35 gold medals, 32 silver medals, 24 bronze, and 40-plus medallion medals in a variety of kung fu, tai chi, and sparring categories.

For the first time, WahLum Kung Fu & Tai Chi Academy won both Youth All-Around Form Championship and Adult All-Around Form Championship, beating over prestigious teams from all over the U.S., Canada, Brazil, Venezuela, Switzerland, and Taiwan!

Moreover, WahLum Malden’s students received a record-high nine Competitor of the Year nominations for their exemplary 2013 performances and three students won the Competitor of the Year Awards in the categories of Adult Female Kung Fu (Winner: Andrea So), Youth Male Kung Fu (Winner: Thomas Tran) , and Youth Female Kung Fu (Yen-Nhi Chit).

“I am so very proud of every single student! Each competitive performance by everyone was a display of discipline, courage, hard work, fellowship, and respect for self and others. The parents were amazingly supportive and without everyone coming together, we wouldn’t have this level of success and fun. I am truly humbled by my students’ successes.”

“We at the Yee Fung Toy Association are also very proud of Mai. To able to bring out the best of her students to compete and to win all those medals; to accomplish what she has accomplished as Sifu at her own WahLum Kung Fu school for these past years. The Association is looking forward to seeing Mai and her students perform at our National Convention next year.” President Warren Yee.
